Civil War letters, 1862-1865.

The majority of letters, 1862-1865, were written by Henry B. Bray to his mother Mariam Davis and brother Devotion. The subjects discussed include camp routines, family life and gossip, and troop movements. Henry also mentions the battles of Shiloh and Corinth. This collection of letters was transcribed, edited, and annotated by W. Mark Anderson.

Henry B. Bray was a gas fitter in Montgomery, Ala. before the Civil War. In 1862 he joined the Confederate Army, was promoted to 1st Sergeant in the 17th Alabama Infantry, and was eventually wounded at the Battle of Peachtree Creek.
